Small Wind in Georgia

Wind energy systems can range in size and in the amount of power that they produce. Many small businesses, home-owners, and farmers are beginning to install small wind turbines on their properties for a number of applications ranging from powering a small battery bank for back up power, to reducing utility bills, to completely offsetting any need for interconnection to the electric grid.

According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) a small wind turbine is a turbine with a rated capacity below 100 kW. In general, small wind turbines need to be installed in areas that experience a consistent wind over 8 mph. In the state of Georgia this often occurs at higher elevations in north Georgia. General siting guidelines for small wind-electric systems can be found in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Small Wind Electric Systems: A U.S. Consumer’s Guide report.
